According to the California Vehicle code (CVC 400 (a) and CVC 405), a M1 Motorcycle License is required to operate ANY two-wheeled vehicle that doesn’t have pedals—either a motor-driven cycle (149cc and below) or a Motorcycle (150cc and above) . An M2 License is for mopeds---which are motorized vehicles with pedals. Our fleet of scooters are all M1 compliant.


As you can see, any two-wheeled vehicle that do not have pedals requires a California M1 License to operate legally, thus you have to be able to test on them.


The scooter utilized for the examination must possess current registration and insurance coverage. Additionally, the scooter must be in complete working order, including all components such as the horn, turn signals, and any other essential features.

To comply with current regulations, any DOT-compliant helmet sold in the United States must display a label on the back with specific information. This includes the manufacturer or brand name, model designation, the letters "DOT," the phrase "FMVSS No. 218," and the word "CERTIFIED." Be aware that labels on helmets manufactured before May 13, 2013, may simply read "DOT." Keep in mind that some DMV testers may not accept a helmet if it only has the DOT label without the additional information. Always check your helmet's labeling to ensure it meets these requirements and is accepted on the day of your test.

Yes, though I'd advise against it. It's perfectly legal to purchase a motorcycle, new or second-hand, without holding a license, but this decision comes with its own set of complications. Firstly, following your purchase, there's a limited timeframe within which you must register the bike in your state. Typically, registration demands proof of insurance, which can be a stumbling block since some insurance providers may require you to hold a valid motorcycle license. Another issue is that without a license, many dealerships might not permit you to take the motorcycle for a test drive.  Moreover, after settling on a motorcycle and finalizing your purchase, you'll be faced with the added expense of towing it home or the hassle of arranging for a licensed friend to ride it back, which could set you back a few hundred dollars. In summary, purchasing a motorcycle is considerably smoother and more straightforward if you already possess a motorcycle license.
